How much "taller" is a 351W than a 302?

Ian 23.07.2012, 16:36
By my calculations, it's 1.6" taller than a 302.

Is this correct?

Thanks!

Ian

Edit -- to clarify, all other things being equal besides the block, how much more hood clearance do I need?

with some creativity and depending on the intake...you can get a 9.5 deck 351 under a stock hood...but it'll be tight.

I assume that means using the drop motor mounts?

I'm trying to figure out if I can get what I want under a 1.5" cowl hood, and still have about 1" of clearance.

drop mounts and most likely some washers on the kmember...

and Im talking about a carb'd application...I have no idea about an EFI intake fitting under the hood.

Cool, thanks for the info. My application is carb'd, so that's what I need to know.

Do you know exactly how much "taller" the engine is? Is 1.60" correct (or roughly correct?)

i have gotten a 9.5 deck block with victor jr manifold under stock hood in both an 83 gt and a 79 fairmont. like has been said just takes a few tricks.
foxchassisfreak 23.07.2012, 18:12
My Windsor, with a victor and carb wouldn't fit under a 3" hood with an air cleaner on it, that's with no tricks. So it'll take some creativity to get it in there

Oh, and tall valve covers and power brake boosters create issues too, I had to cut the corner of my valve cover and reshape it a bit

351 efi.... super vic jr efi manifold with the "smaller" elbow they sell as well. The top elbow will clear: ....

You have to remove the hood insulation and cut about 3 inches of the x bracing on the stock hood to clear. Works like a charm and sneaky as hell. Of course with Vert engine mounts.

Do you know how much the drop mounts lower the motor?

I think most are 3/4" drop.Holcomb motorsports sells solid drop mounts for $79 that work nice..also like Josh said, probably need washers between k member and frame...

Are all drop mounts solid?

I was thinking the convertible mounts are a little lower?
squeak 24.07.2012, 00:08
I used vert mounts. I think half an inch or so shorter.
