| OkieHog 18.11.2011, 20:48 Okay, I recently acquired an 88 GT, that is a California (mass air) car. Has had extensive mods of all sorts done, but, I bought it unfinished. I cannot seem to get this thing to get fire. New solenoid. No fire. New Coil. No fire. New starter switch on the column-- old one broken-- no fire. We were just sure this had to be the issue, but no luck.
The cable from the starter to the solenoid has two wires. The large one, and a smaller one, but, there is not really a place on the starter that is in the car to plug the smaller wire into. It is not an "eye" connection, but a slide on connecter, and small.
I have an 89 GT also, and the starter only has the one wire running to the solenoid. No secondary wire at all.
When you cross the solenoid, to try and turn the motor, all it does is click. The starter does not engage at all.
Also, the car has had an external High Performance fuel pump installed, but, when I turn the key on, the solenoid for that will click, but, I do not hear the pump engage.
Electrical issues and I don't get along at all. I am stumped. Anybody got any ideas? Help would be greatly appreciated. I really need to get this car running, cause it is a nice little GT. FoMoCo1 18.11.2011, 20:51 sounds like the car was wired for a ford factory mini starter OkieHog 18.11.2011, 22:57 As a matter of fact, it has a mini-starter on it-- or so it seems. It has the solenoid on top of the starter. What do I do in this case?
With this situation, I basically have two solenoids on the car. One on the starter, and one on the fender well. I had wondered about that, but, being very ignorant on electrical, I have no idea how to correct the situation, other than to go back to a larger starter? imajeenyas 18.11.2011, 23:09 That wire should have 12v when the key is turned to the start position. Plug that wire into the solenoid on the "s" terminal on the starter. policeman50 19.11.2011, 02:18 Are you sure that your computer is getting power?
What ECU is in the car? I'm assuming that this car has had a mass air conversion done to it and you are running an A9L or A9P? OkieHog 19.11.2011, 11:32 Which wire are you referring to specifically? I am really suspecting at this juncture that the mini-starter is the issue here, with the dual solenoids being the bug a boo. FoMoCo1 20.11.2011, 02:14 a few times a have seen the mini starters with a small jumper wire from the small solenoid on top to the main stater wire, eliminating the need for the smaller wire to the starter solenoid policeman50 20.11.2011, 18:19 I was more referring to the fuel pump issue.
