| trevnut 25.07.2011, 03:20 This 99 Cobra was brought to Top Notch to have the TOB and pilot bearing changed and also to see what else could be wrong. The owner reported loss of power and some rattling during idle that would get worse and louder with rpm. Once delivered to us, I rev’d it up and knew right away it was something in the bottom end. Sounded like a rod knocking around.
I contacted the owner with my suspicions and was given the go ahead to tear it down and see what the problems were.
So I started pulling everything needed to get the motor and tranny out of the car. Once the engine and tranny were out, I proceeded to take the oil pan off and here is what I found..
Bearing material
....
Metal in pick up
....
I proceeded to grab all the rods and tried to shake them. I found #4 and 5 both had spun the bearings.
Spun bearing
....
So, with the motor having 2 spun rod bearings and some nasty grooves in 2 of the cylinders, the owner decided to have it re-built. A fully forged rotating assembly has been ordered and all the other necessary items needed to put this 4V motor back together and be stronger. The machine work will be done locally then the engine will be assembled by Top Notch. A new clutch has been recommended also, since it is all currently out now anyway. I cant wait to get this thing back together.
Car currently in shop.
